Bam, a historic city situated 185 kilometers east of Kerman city in Iran, is a testament to ancient Persian civilization and ingenuity. Home to globally recognized UNESCO World Heritage Sites – including the magnificent Historic Bam Citadel and the sophisticated Qanats of Akbarabad and Qasemabad – the county is actively leveraging its profound heritage to bolster its position as a thriving cultural tourism hub. Recent reports highlight a series of exciting events scheduled for September 2024, designed to attract visitors and showcase Bam's rich cultural tapestry.
Bam’s ancient roots run deep, embodied by its remarkable historical landmarks that have earned global recognition. At the forefront is the Historic Bam Citadel (Arg-e Bam), the world’s largest adobe structure, symbolizing centuries of architectural prowess and human endurance. Complementing this monumental fortress are the Qanats of Akbarabad and Qasemabad, two intricate underground water management systems that stand as a testament to ingenious engineering from antiquity. These three sites collectively underscore Bam’s pivotal role in preserving a shared global heritage.
The Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department of Bam is actively championing the city’s appeal, orchestrating events that blend local traditions with broader tourism initiatives. September 2024 is set to be a vibrant month for Bam, with three major festivals on the calendar.
The annual Date Festival (Jashn-e Khorma), a celebration of the region’s abundant date harvest, will take place from September 13-19 at the Arg-e Jadid Bam Special Economic Zone. This event promises a rich program of cultural and artistic activities, inviting visitors to experience the local customs surrounding this vital crop.
In a new initiative, Bam will host its first-ever Pistachio Festival on September 6 in Abaregh village within the Dehbakri district. This festival aims to highlight the pistachio-rich areas of the county and maximize the economic potential of this valuable product, drawing attention to another key agricultural asset of the region.
Further cementing Bam’s status as a destination for experiential tourism, the “Khoshk ta Khosht” (Brick to Brick) Camper and Caravan Rally is slated to begin in Bam on September 13. Organized by the Kerman Province Tourism and Automobilism Club, this unique event will see approximately 300 nature enthusiasts in 100 camper vehicles from across Iran converge on Bam. Participants will have the opportunity to publicly display their vehicles and, critically, visit the Historic Bam Citadel and Arg-e Jadid before embarking on their provincial journey through other significant sites in Kerman, such as Rayan, Mahan, and Rafsanjan.
These events collectively demonstrate Bam’s commitment to harnessing its world-class cultural heritage and vibrant local produce to foster a dynamic tourism sector. By drawing visitors to its iconic historical sites and immersing them in its living traditions, Bam is solidifying its position as a captivating and essential destination for cultural tourism in Iran.
